What this tool does

This tool is for parents and relatives of a child who is in local authority care and who feel they have been told very little. It explains the legal position in plain English, what information you are entitled to, how contact works, how a care order can be challenged and where to get free, specialist legal help.

It gives general information for England and Wales, not legal advice about your case. A family law solicitor can tell you what applies to you.

When to use it

Use it if your child has been taken into care, whether recently or years ago, and you do not understand why or what you can do. It covers voluntary arrangements under section 20, interim and full care orders, and adoption plans. It also helps grandparents and other relatives who want to stay in a child's life or be considered as their carer.

Many parents tell us they have been going round in circles with social workers, especially when they live in a different area from the child. The tool explains who else you can contact, including the Independent Reviewing Officer.

How it works

You tell us the legal position if you know it, whether you have parental responsibility, your relationship to the child, your current contact and what you most want to achieve. The tool explains your rights and the next steps in order, starting with how to find out the legal position if you are not sure. Nothing you enter is saved, and you do not need to give your name or email to use it.

Parents in care proceedings can get legal aid without a means test, so please speak to a specialist children law solicitor as early as you can.
